The Organizational and Team Culture Indicator™

"Corporate culture can have a significant impact on a firm's long-term economic performance." John Kotter & James Heskett, Corporate Culture and Performance

In their landmark book, Corporate Culture and Performance, leading-edge business consultants John Kotter and James Heskett documented that organizational culture's bottom-line impact is "greater than . strategy, organizational structure, management systems, financial analysis tools, leadership, etc." The multi-year benefits for the right styles of organizational culture include:

  • Twelve times greater stock value growth
  • Four times greater revenue growth
  • 750 times better net income growth

Despite its enormous benefits, the authors lament that culture is "often invisible to the people involved."

The Organizational and Team Culture Indicator™, developed by Carol Pearson, Ph.D., takes off those blinders. A ground-breaking, scientifically validated measure of an organization's culture and its brand and employee identities, the OTCI® recognizes that the deepest and clearest understanding of corporate culture is embodied in the work experiences and belief systems of its employees—essentially the "stories" the corporation believes about its origins, practices, and goals.

The gateway to understanding these shared experiences is the archetype—the organization's stories, symbols, patterns, and themes. Archetypes touch us at an unconscious, instinctual level and exert profound influence on our motivations and actions.

When a company's cultural archetypes resonate with its employees, the alignment between individual and organization takes place at the deepest, most basic level of engagement, driving commitment, innovation, efficiency, customer service, and success. These archetypes are the keys to unlocking the power of culture (see the book Mapping the Organizational Psyche).

The OTCI assesses twelve organizational archetypal patterns, measuring the collective cultural perceptions shared from the top desk to every desk. The OTCI gives you a roadmap to a three-way alignment of employee beliefs, company identity, and organizational strengths—on the way to new horizons and unprecedented success.

The OTCI can help your organization:

  • Develop healthy, aligned beliefs, practices, and goals
  • Create a positive future vision that resonates with employees
  • Discover and maintain a compelling brand or public identity
  • Facilitate smooth mergers and acquisitions (the #1 cause for failed mergers is organizational culture clash)
  • Recruit and empower effective leaders

Administration and results are available in two forms:

  • The OTCI® Basic Report (unrestricted usage) is available to any employee seeking an understanding of their perception of their work culture. The report is accompanied by the booklet Understanding Archetypes in Organizations: An Introduction to the OTCI® Basic Report, which describes the twelve organizational archetypes and provides guidance in interpreting and applying results.
  • The OTCI® Professional Report (requiring administration by a qualified professional) gives a much deeper and more comprehensive look at the overall organization, showing dominant cultural themes, assessing cultural alignment across individuals and divisions, and mapping organizational strengths and values. The professional report optionally includes delivery of OTCI® Individual Assessment Reports to individual employees as well. These reports show individual cultural perceptions of the organization.
