Requirements for Use

It is important for those who use the Step III assessment with clients in one-to-one counseling settings to have an advanced degree in psychology, psychotherapy, or some other area that provides training and experience in "interviewing" or talking with individuals about sensitive areas in their personal lives.

Step III professionals need to be able to adopt a non-pathological, non-judgmental approach to clients. The MBTI® Step III instrument, like the MBTI Step I™ and Step II™ instruments, addresses healthy personality characteristics.

Special training is required through the MBTI® Step III Certification Program because professional users need to know the background, development, appropriate use, and perhaps most important, realize the paradigm shift required to go beyond the basics of type to type development.

The MBTI® Step III instrument and Interpretive Report are available for purchase and use only by those professionals who have:

  • A Master's degree or higher in an approved field
  • Work with clients in a one-to-one counseling, coaching, or therapeutic relationship, with a minimum of two years of experience
  • Have successfully completed the MBTI® Certification program, which gives attendees the required credentials to purchase and use the MBTI Step I™ and Step II™ assessments, or complete another approved training program that teaches the theory of psychological type and how it is used to help people increase self-awareness and develop skills for more effective living
  • Successfully complete the MBTI® Step III Certification Program with the recommendation of the instructor

Before applicants are approved for participation in a Step III training program, they must complete the online form: Professional Requirements for attending the MBTI® Step III Certification Program
