Assessment instruments, tools and tests offered for purchase by CAPT fall into one of two categories; restricted or unrestricted.
Restricted instruments require the buyer to have specific educational and/or training qualifications.
Unrestricted instruments are available for purchase by anyone who is interested in their use and results.
The Myers Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) is a restricted instrument.
MBTI® Step I™ and Step II™ Instruments
To become recognized as an approved professional MBTI user with CAPT, please complete the CAPT Statement of Professional Qualifications form. When the form is reviewed, we look to see if one of the following two requirements has been met:
- Educational Eligibility – someone who holds a Master’s degree or higher at an accredited college or university in Psychology, Counseling, Organization Development or related field is considered educationally eligible to purchase and administer assessments.
OR
- Successful completion of a recognized MBTI® Certification Program (that provides training in the theory and uses of the MBTI Step I and Step II instruments) and passed the common exams. This individual will be granted the Certified Practitioner designation.
The MBTI® Certification Program presented by CAPT is approved by CPP, Inc., the exclusive publisher of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator instrument and meets this requirement.
If approved, you will receive a letter stating that you have met the purchasing requirements. If not, you will receive a letter outlining options for becoming an approved MBTI user. CAPT will only ship restricted assessment materials or scoring results to approved individuals. Purchase orders must indicate the name of the employee on record with CAPT as professionally approved, either on the P.O. itself or on an attachment. CAPT cannot process a purchase order without this information; therefore, it will be returned. To avoid the return of your order, MBTI users need to make this very clear to their purchasing office.
MBTI® Step III™ Instrument
It is important for those who use the Step III™ assessment with clients in one-to-one counseling settings to have an advanced degree in psychology, psychotherapy, or some other area that provides training and experience in "interviewing" or talking with individuals about sensitive areas in their personal lives.
Step III professionals need to be able to adopt a non-pathological, non-judgmental approach to clients. The MBTI® Step III™ instrument, like the MBTI Step I™ and Step II™ instruments, addresses healthy personality characteristics.
Special training is required through the MBTI® Step III™ Certification Program because professional users need to know the background, development, appropriate use, and perhaps most important, realize the paradigm shift required to go beyond the basics of type to type development.
The MBTI® Step III™ instrument and Interpretive Report are available for purchase and use only by those professionals who have:
- A Master's degree or higher
- Worked with clients in a one-to-one counseling, coaching, or therapeutic relationship, with a minimum of two years experience
- Successfully completed the MBTI® Certification program, or other approved training program, that teaches the theory of psychological type and how it is used to help people increase self-awareness and develop skills for more effective living
- Completed the MBTI® Step III™ Certification Program
Before applicants are approved for participation in a Step III training program, they must complete the online form: Professional Requirements for attending the MBTI® Step III™ Certification Program
CAPT distributes MBTI materials in the USA only. For a listing of distributors in other countries call CPP at (800) 642-1765.
CAPT follows the American Psychological Association testing guidelines as they relate to the purchase of all of the above restricted instruments, as well as those of CPP, Inc. as they relate to the MBTI instrument.
Valid results for all instruments depend on appropriate reading level and comprehension of the English language, unless an approved translation in another language is designated. For specific questions, contact the CAPT Customer Service Department at 800.777.2278 (352.375.0160).
